Sandro Botticelli
The Coronation of the Virgin

1490-92
Tempera on panel
Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy

Provenance: Church of San Marco, Florence

Usually it is Christ who places the crown on the Virgin Mary's head, but in this version it is the Father. Seraphim and other angels surround them.

According to the Web Gallery of Art, the saints pictured below are (left to right) John the Evangelist, Augustine, Jerome (also identified by his red cardinal's garb), and Eligius. The latter is the patron saint of goldsmiths, whose guild in Florence was responsible for the maintenance and decoration of the church. He was bishop of Noyon in the seventh century, hence the mitre and crozier. There are no other indicators of his identity, but two of his miracles are pictured in the predella panel directly below his portrait.
